Winter Fishing Idyll - an extravaganza of Norfolk’s secret delights on John’s happy hunting ground!

Winter Fishing in Norfolk with John Bailey

Take John's guidance and enthusiasm as much or as little as you need it and enjoy the companionship of likeminded anglers in a lovely, unspoiled setting.

Relish massive pike, huge tench, big chub to six pounds and winter roaching on the legendary River Wensum. You might even take a boat up an almost unknown pike river just a mile from the sea. It's a lost, lonely land, a haven for ornithologists and pike men too! You can expect fish into double figures, hope for a twenty and keep your fingers crossed for a thirty. You'll be fishing for pike that have rarely, if ever, been touched. Almost like reliving the Broadland experience of the 1960s.

Or fish one of John’s hidden pike lakes, deep in ancient Norfolk estates, a lost, lonely land, where thirties and fish of forty pounds, are on the cards and upper doubles and twenties proliferate, a haven for ornithologists and pike men too! Fish for pike that have rarely, if ever, been touched. You might drift further south and take a boat out up the River Wensum for big roach. You might happen upon one of the mill pools John has access to and land a very big wandering barbel.

Roach, stunning huge perch, chub, carp, pike and, sometimes, even the occasional huge barbel can make Norfolk your winter wonderland!

John says

“What I like to think is one of the great strengths of the Norfolk fishing is its adaptability. Because I live right on the waters, I can look at weather forecasts, look at conditions and decide forty-eight or seventy-two hours before the trip where the best chances of success will be. If we look at early December, the probable options will be estate lake carp, rudd and tench fishing, larger water tench, new season piking, river chub and barbel, river roach or some fabulous stillwater perch fishing.

Of course, the decision is made after consultation with you - our client. What you want to achieve is fully taken into account and we decide on an itinerary well in advance of your arrival. This means you know exactly what gear and which baits to bring. If there is any problem with tackle, then I have got a barn absolutely bursting with the stuff so it’s never a problem.

The major objectives are to fish beautiful, generally private waters, to learn new techniques, to catch gob-smackingly gorgeous fish and to enjoy the company. Personal bests are very frequent but I like to think that clients go home with far more profound memories than simply pounds and ounces.”

“Everything about the trip far exceeded my expectations... Everyone got along so well and seemed to enjoy it immensely—I am sure that you will see several of them again, myself included. My one comment to improve the trip would perhaps be to include the option of an extra day, as the time went far too quickly!” Nigel Chapman, Rowlands Castle

“He inspires trust, especially on a one-to-one level. I appreciated his considered opinions of the prevailing situations and he was not given to snap judgements” Andrew Mills, Harpenden

“We had a brilliant time” Jems Harris, London

“quite sublime fishing” Rob Legge, Woking
